Students from Clover Park Cosmetology Program Win Matrix Scholarship

Misty Winesberry and Mila Golovenko thought Oct. 1 was just a normal day at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington.

The Cosmetology Program students were ushered into a classroom for what they were told was an impromptu hair-color lesson. Winesberry and Golovenko were both surprised when Matrix representatives entered the classroom with balloons, roses and checks made out to each student for $1,000 for the Matrix Imagine All You Can Be Scholarship.

The two students both submitted a short YouTube video explaining what they imagined they could be, and they were two of 50 scholarship recipients selected in the country. The contest was open to students at accredited beauty schools in the U.S.

Scholarship winners were announced in early September, but because of CPTC's quarter break the representatives had to wait until the students were back on campus for the surprise. The delayed announcement caused both students to believe they hadn't been selected.

"I'm so shocked," Golovenko said. "I wasn't really expecting it."

Winesberry is pursuing her dream to be a professional hair and makeup artist. She placed second runner-up at the Midsummer Night's Hair Show this summer, but the grand prize winner, Daniel Bacon, gave his $1,000 scholarship to Winesberry. Every dollar has made a huge difference for Winesberry, who is set to finish in March 2015.

"It's been kind of a struggle, but it all helps so much," Winesberry said. "I'm taking these opportunities and it's been such a huge blessing."

CPTC's Cosmetology Program provides students with hands-on experience with real clients. Students are trained in all aspects of professional cosmetology, from hair design and sculpting to advanced coloring. For more information, visit
