September is National Alopecia Awareness Month. The first Alopecia Awareness Cruise of its kind to include seminars from a doctor of Trichology, and Alopecia essay contest will be held September 10-15, 2012.

The visionary behind this cruise is Dr. Linda Amerson, doctor of Trichology. In addition, she is the only board certified Trichologist in the west. Dr. Amerson has over 30 year of experience in the hair/scalp care industry, has written for over 45 national magazine publications, and is the manufacturer of her own exclusive product line.

"The purpose of our cruise is to create awareness by educating consumers and professionals about alopecia and enlighten themabout the external culprits," remarks Amerson.

Amerson included an essay contest for children ages 6-18 whom are affected with alopecia. The winning essay was written by Cayla Staples. Cayla is an amazing 13 year old teen, who was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, then progressed to Alopecia Totalis. In Cayla's case, her condition was autoimmune related. It affects over 5 million Americans. Reluctantly, Cayla was forced to begin wearing a wig to avoid social embarrassment at school and other public places. However, Cayla saw that she did not need a wig to validate who she is. Cayla is smart, sassy, and setting her sights on higher goals.

A dynamic mother and daughter team, Carla and Cayla, have organized a non-profit: W.A.S. Girls, Inc. (We Are Strong Girls Inc). This organization is targeting teenage girls aged 12-16. The agenda of events and guest speakers is very impressive. Furthermore goals to improve self esteem, bullying, and improve character traits will be addressed for starters. (www.wasgirlsinc.org)

"My hope is for Cayla Staples winning essay to inspire other children who may be struggling with self esteem, bullying, and acceptance," Dr. Amerson notes.
