Utopia Salon and Day Spa, 1503 Northeast 78th St, Vancouver, has been involved in many events and fundraisers for the Cancer Society since they opened their doors over nine years ago. They have helped raise over $30,000 by their involvement with the Relay for Life, holding holiday shopping parties, 70 disco nights, casino bus trips and spa parties, just to name a few of their creative ideas.

Speaking of creative ideas, Utopia Salon and Day Spa owner, Lisa Houser, turned her wedding reception last June to an 80's Rock Concert fundraiser. Hit Machine, a Portland-based rock band, played at Bethany Vineyards for around 500 people. Tickets were sold to the public and Houser raised $5,000 for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

"My dad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 12 years ago," stated Houser. " That's when I decided, with my daughters, that we needed to help fight for a cure and started getting involved in our community. We have been part of the Relay for Life ever since."

"Last year Utopia's Pink Party & Display won the 2012 Aquage Help Make a Difference Display national contest," beamed Houser. The prize was admission to the Aquage Master Hair Academy and the NAHA awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness month and Utopia held its second 'Think Pink Party' on October 18th. The salon was decorated head to toe with pink products and decorations, and of course, their award winning display! Baskets were overflowing with donations from the community. Each basket was valued over $1,000 and included gifts of Blazer tickets, Amazon gift cards, restaurant certificates, hotel stays, and Utopia Spa services. $5 raffle tickets were sold for a chance to win a basket.

Salon guests and the community were invited to enjoy pink champagne punch and other delectable treats while getting a jump-start on holiday shopping. Each guest received a gift bag with discounts for the salon as well as other local stores, special "pink" awareness gifts and a pink can of Kenra hairspray. The pink party was huge success with over $1200 raised.

The 2013 Northwest Nail Retreat was held in October at Camp Burton on Vashon Island, WA. Over 100 nail techs attended including 25 attendees from Canada.

The event also raised $1,000 for LifeWire, (formerly Eastside Domestic Violence) a national organization for the prevention and help for those suffering from domestic violence. After the fundraising throughout the event, a check was presented to LifeWire's Ward Urion (who had also been a guest speaker.)

Over the course of four days, nail techs attended six 90 minute classes, two five hour hands-on workshops and a marketing seminar presented by keynote speaker Millie Haynam. Two nail competitions, salon style nails and mixed-media, were also held. The top three, in both novice and veteran categories, received medals and prize money.

The 2014 NW Nail Retreat will take place on October 17-20 and, again, space is very limited. Early bird registration for attendees will begin in February and the event expects to sell out by summer.
