Unlock the Secret to Becoming a VIP Haircolorist

What's the secret to becoming a top haircolorist?

One may think it has solely to do with marketing, public relations, and/or good luck.

Marketing is important, it's true. You've got to get your name out there, without a doubt. But after you market yourself, then you have to wow the clients who come to you as a result.

The actual bottom line to becoming a stellar haircolorist is simple: practice.

If you want to get good at something, especially haircoloring, do it over and over and over again, so you have tons of experience to draw upon.

Perhaps the most basic element to becoming a top haircolorist is for you to avoid client disappointment. Listening is perhaps the most vital component to achieving this goal. You must have adequate time for a very thorough color consultation to consider the client's skin tone, what's most flattering for her, and also her wants and needs.

While you're listening to her, you should already be mentally formulating the proper color, and then get ready to go into your 'laboratory' and mix. Also, as you're mixing, I have a personal mantra for you, to now and forever keep in mind -- "maintain the quality and integrity of the hair while coloring!"

Another key factor to becoming a VIP haircolorist is the concept of expectations, or rather conception management, if you will. Unrealistic expectations on both sides – haircolorist and client alike – develop into a set-up for inevitable disappointment for both parties.

Yes, it's true, there are some clients who are truly never happy with whatever haircolor service they receive. Don't get me wrong, though -- it's our job as expert haircolorists, indeed, our job as professionals -- to point out what is possible within the hair during a comprehensive color consultation.

It's vital to be as honest and upfront as possible. The color consult is viable for both new and existing clients. During your consult, share your knowledge of the limitations within her haircolor. Talk about realistic expectations she may have for today's color service, as well as what's possible six months from now. Focus on what will flatter her skin tone the best. Focus on haircolor that will keep her hair its healthiest and shiniest. Ask her to sit with you with an open mind and a fresh perspective. Successful haircoloring is mostly about successful communication. And, don't forget your new creed to live by -- "maintain the quality and integrity of her hair while coloring."

Yes, it's true, a little marketing doesn't hurt. But you've got to be able to back up what you say you can do. After all, at the end of the day, it's all about "word of mouth." Are you familiar with that old, wonderful concept? Well, it's really where it's at with VIP haircoloring. To create and maintain a strong color client base, it's the "one equals five" rule.

One satisfied VIP equals five more -- when that satisfied client refers you friends.

Find sneezers and turn them into satisfied clients. A sneezer is a savvy individual who loves to tell all their friends about a good product, or a good movie, a good restaurant, or, in our case -- a VIP haircolorist. We love sneezers! Find them and make them your besties. In truth, it may only take a handful of satisfied sneezers to create a long-lasting VIP client base -- as long as you're good at what you do!

Don't sit back and wait to become a star colorist. Take action -- take legitimate steps toward your goal. Listen to your clients. Perform stellar color consultations. Set realistic expectations for your color services. Find savvy people who will "sneeze" about you all over town. Above all else, meditate on and live by your newfound mantra -- "maintain the quality and integrity of the hair while haircoloring."
