One of the most common complaints received by the customer service staff at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is from cosmetologists, barbers and specialists who fail to renew their licenses on time because they did not receive a renewal notice from TDLR. As a courtesy to its licensees, TDLR routinely sends renewal notices. You will only receive it, though, if you keep your address up to date.
Remember, if you move and your mailing address changes, you must file a change of address with TDLR within 30 days. This not only allows TDLR to keep track of its licensees, it also benefits you because you receive your license renewal notice.
If a change of address is not filed with the agency, you may not receive important correspondence that can affect you license status, such as your license renewal notice. Hundreds of renewal notices are returned to TDLR every month because the license holder failed to file a change of address with the agency.
Barbers and cosmetologists may file a change of address with TDLR in several ways.
However you file your change of address, be sure to include your new address, your email address, your license number and your name as it appears on your license.
Have you ever wondered if one day someone will look at photographs taken in 2009 and marvel that no matter how much things change, they stay the same? We study Greek artwork showing men gathering at local barber shops for barbering services and sharing news and are amazed it is the same today.
Barber shops have always played an important role in the community. They not only offer great haircuts and shaves, but they also serve as a meeting place where news and information is easily shared. In November barber shops in the Austin and Pflugerville area partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Central Texas and the local African-American Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity to talk to customers and recruit mentors for the BBBS program.
BBBS staff, current mentors and Alpha members spent a cool, crisp Saturday morning at participating barber shops talking to clients about the importance of providing positive role models to Texas youth, particularly African-American boys. As men waited their turn for a haircut, some with their wife patiently accompanying them, they listened intently to the information about BBBS. Many had questions about the program and were able to get answers from the BBBS representatives in a relaxed, comfortable environment.
Perhaps one day, someone, will look at the photos taken on a Saturday in Austin, Texas, and think to himself, “way back in the old days barber shops were a vital part of the community, just like today.” Change can be a good thing in some instances, but the friendships and bonding found in the neighborhood barber shop is one thing that will stay the same.
